What Is a Crypto Whale Alert? How to Read It
A crypto whale alert surfaces large trades or positions above a defined threshold. A large amount alone does not mean buying or selling pressure; the alert must not be interpreted without knowing which data type it comes from (on-chain transfer, exchange trade or futures position).
What does a whale alert show?
When reading an alert, first check the data type and timestamp. The whale alerts on this site track large positions in the futures market — a different data type than wallet-to-wallet on-chain transfers. The threshold ($20K, $40K, $60K, $80K) only sets where the list begins.
How to interpret threshold and direction
A long tag describes the observed large position direction and short the opposite; neither proves where price will go next. A single large player trade may be a hedge, arbitrage or partial close.
- Read the threshold as a filter, not as signal strength.
- A long tag does not mean "certainly up", a short tag does not mean "certainly down".
- Consecutive same-direction alerts may be parts of one large trade.
Reduce false positives
Instead of opening a trade the moment you see an alert, inspect price, volume and support/resistance context on the coin page. In low-liquidity pairs a single large trade can distort the entire view.
- Did the price move before or after the alert?
- Can the 24h volume absorb the alert size?
- Are similar alerts appearing on other coins at the same time?
Use it together with the live feed
Whale alerts work best with the live trade feed and the coin detail page. You can watch whether aggressive buy/sell flow continues after the alert on the live trades page.
- Does post-alert trade flow continue in the same direction?
- Where is the current price relative to the alert zone?
- Repeating alerts or a one-off move?
Checklist
- Is the alert data type (futures position) clearly stated?
- Is the timestamp current?
- Is the threshold used only as a filter?
- Were price, volume and S/R context reviewed together?
- Is it remembered that the alert is not investment advice?
Frequently asked questions
No. The direction of a large position alone does not show where the price will go; it must be evaluated with context.
No. Alerts here are based on large position/trade sizes observed in futures markets, not wallet transfers.
